Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
