European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
