RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
