Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
